Dear Editor:
Time to weigh in. There has been much ado about the comments of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding influx of male workers into communities where major projects are occurring. Anyone with any knowledge of these issues realize that he was paraphrasing what has been proven in many studies.
Google "”Managing The Risks of Adverse Impacts on Communities from Temporary Projects Induced Labor Influx,” with particular attention to paragraph 8: “Genderbased violence” and “Increased risk of illicit behaviour and crime.”
This is a well-documented study and anyone who doubts the findings is, to say the least, naive.
If you then Google, “What Trudeau actually said at G20,” you will find that he was just reminding people of the findings of these studies. He went on to say that Canada has recognized these problems, but because of our encouragement of genderbased equality in these jobs, the problem in Canada is not severe. He was not criticizing Canada’s oilfield workers.
However, if one thinks that there is not still a problem, however reduced, just Google, “Fort McMurray crime.”
My point is the unfair reporting of Trudeau’s remarks that were meant to be constructive and advisory in nature. This reporting is twisted and has no veracity. Patrick MacDonald
