Have a heart in February

- By LAurA TurnBuLL

February is Heart Month.

What a great time to give your heart a boost by volunteering. Those with health challenges as well as ones who are illness-free can be active volunteers. Whether home bound or out and about, there are regular opportunities to engage in meaningful community support.

It might be phoning a home-bound person offering a friendly listening ear. It may be taking meals on wheels to a hungry neighbour post-surgery. Possibly your interest is in helping with the Grandfondo event each summer.

What about assisting the Red Cross distribute mobility aids to those who are convalescing?

The South Okanagan Similkameen (now named Community Connections) Volunteer Centre recognizes that volunteering brings a new dimension to one’s social and emotional life.

Executive Director Subrina Monteith explains, “Volunteering offers positive effects on daily living. It gives one something to look forward to and an opportunity for engagement with another outside of an individual’s daily routine.”

If you want to do something good for your heart, contact the South Okanagan Similkameen Volunteer Centre (Community Connections) at 1-888576-5661, email the Centre at info@ voluntrecentre.info or drop into its new location in The Cannery at 1101475 Fairview Road.

Office hours are generally 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. Calling ahead first is highly encouraged.

Our executive director Subrina Monteith would love to talk to you about volunteering for heart health.

Expand your day, your insights, your life, by volunteering.

Laura Turnbull is chair of the South Okanagan Similkameen Community Connections & Volunteer Centre.
