Dogs can learn to use a treadmill

- Mutts & Motorcycles

When the cold weather grips the air, walkways and pretty much everything around us, even our dogs really don’t want to go out in the weather.

It’s not really that bad when you prepare the dog for the outside cold, the same way we prepare ourselves, but there is another way to give the dog exercise and not get cold at all.

I put the dogs on the treadmill.

Yes, you have to train them to do it and it takes short lessons and patience, but they can learn. I have it easy now because dogs do learn from each other and Pearl loves the treadmill and has her favourite movies to watch while working out.

I know, a bit spoiled but it works. Her favourite movies are Snow Dogs and the Croods. I have no idea why she likes the Croods; she just does.

Our dogs became so accustomed to the treadmill that when they went out in the morning to go pee and would be forced to brave the biting cold, they knew it was treadmill day.

When they came into the house the dogs went straight for the treadmill. Lucy taught Pearl and they would jog together. Without a care or thought, Lucy let Pearl place herself in between Lucy’s legs and together they would watch the television.

Their system worked so well, I had no intention of changing it or disturbing their bond. So that I could jog along with them, I borrowed a friend’s treadmill and set it up so we were side by side. They had the television in front of them, so I had to work a bit more at watching the movie.

I did find they never got bored with watching the same thing, whereas I on the other hand longed for a bit more movie variety but didn’t want to mess with a good plan. We had our workout together and I learned most of the dialogue from the Croods.

Abby trained Leia this year when we were all struck with a cold snap that challenged the boldest of dogs and owners.

It’s a family thing now I guess for everyone to jog. I am surprised they don’t have two treadmills but I guess the good part of it is each jogger can choose their own movie to watch during their workout.

There are certain things to remember when using a treadmill that really pertain to all of us. Just like the rest of us, don’t run after a meal.

Give the dog at least two hours break before running if they have eaten. And for the sake of the dog, it doesn’t have to be a long jog. The treadmill is an activity and definitely not a challenge. Begin slow, more walking speed and work up to a slow jog.

It is not a quick, high-energy, get-running experience. The goal is exercise for a dog, not an accomplishment that we humans tend to enjoy.

Do a few short sessions over the day to make them feel relaxed. I tend to make a habit of doing it after pee time. And don’t forget the water. Very important. Obviously for the dog, offer water after the jog.

And remember, if you jog together, they get to choose the movie. It seems to mean a lot to them.
