Fundraiser for family of Osoyoos boy killed by dogs

- BY JOE FRIES

Just over $22,000 had been raised as of mid-morning Friday for the family of an 11-year-old Osoyoos boy who was killed by dogs in Edmonton earlier this week.

The victim is identified in a GoFundMe campaign as Kache Grist. It reveals he was attacked by “two very large dogs” while visiting family in the Alberta city on Monday.

“This is a huge and unexpected expense that they do not have funds to cover. Any help at all will be greatly appreciated. Let’s help give him a beautiful goodbye,” states the fundraiser, which has a $40,000 goal.

School District 53 superintendent Marcus Toneatto said support workers have been sent to Osoyoos Elementary School, where the boy attended Grade 5.

“The district’s critical incident team was immediately gathered, notified of the situation and developed a response plan to support students and staff at the school,” he said.

“We want to send our heartfelt condolences to the family.”

Toneatto said the school and the family are asking for privacy.

Edmonton police said Thursday the two large dogs belong to a roommate of the boy’s father, whom the child was visiting when the attack happened.

Officers were called to the quiet southern suburb where they found the dogs and the boy, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both animals were seized, and they remain in the custody of the city’s Animal Care and Control unit.

Police said Thursday the medical examiner continues to investigate the manner of death but did not say whether the dogs’ owner would be charged.

The City of Edmonton has said animal control was called about two previous attacks at the home. There have also been numerous barking complaints in the past year.
