- WHOLE FOODS MARKET

AUSTIN, Texas (Feb. 24, 2023) – Whole Foods Market celebrates the Environmental Protection Agency’s Final Determination under the Clean Water Act that provides landmark protections for the world’s largest sockeye salmon fishery.

“Our company mission is centered on nourishing people and the planet,” Karen Christensen, senior vice president, Merchandising for Perishables & Quality Standards at Whole Foods Market, said. “We are thrilled to see this precious resource preserved, and proud to have collaborated with a broad group of organizations to protect Bristol Bay’s sockeye salmon fishery.”

“Bristol Bay is a very unique place – the world’s most abundant source of wild salmon. With the recent EPA action, we’ve now seen administrations under both major political parties take extraordinary actions to protect Bristol Bay’s pristine salmon habitat,” Andy Wink, executive director, Bristol Bay Regional Seafood Development Association, said. “Preserving this natural treasure for future generations is something we can all agree on and we’re thankful to all the partners who stood up to do the right thing.”

All Whole Foods Market’s salmon is Responsibly Farmed or sustainable wild-caught. For wild-caught salmon, the company sources only from fisheries that are certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) or rated “Green” or “Yellow” by Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch. These programs help evaluate issues critical to seafood sustainability, such as abundant fish populations, healthy habitats, and low impacts on other marine life. ■
