Ars poetica

Prairie Fire - - MARILYN DUMONT -

when pressed for definition, I say

that I don’t know how to fix it

in so many words,

but I know that poetry swings

that it hitches a ride and loosens from stillness

it leans into motion and rocks there

that it takes up with tempo and pulses

it inhabits our bones and purrs

it measures the length of our framed life

and orders the chaotic stubble around us
