City hosted open house for former Swift Current school buildings Aug. 14
The City of Swift Current invited residents to an Open House at the Credit Union i-Plex Tuesday night.
The City has been engaged in a multistep process to establish the future and use of the former Ashley Park and Oman School sites.
After meeting with owners of properties in the school communities, the City presented proposed plans for the sites. Visuals of the proposed sites were on display for residents to review.
“It was important to engage with the property owners directly adjacent to these sites initially, as their property values will be impacted the most by this project,” said Michael Ruus, General Manager of Planning & Growth Development for the City of Swift Current. “Now that the project consultant has analyzed all the initial feedback, we’ve balanced all this information into a draft plan. We’re very excited to receive feedback from all of our citizens on this most recent update”.
Residents provided city organizers feedback and are excited for the new plans to come in to fruition. City of Swift Current organizers are enthusiastic and optimistic about the proposals for the former school sites. There is no timeline for construction to begin however, it is anticipated that it will be developed in the next three to five years.
“Basically, for both Ashley Park and Oman School sites, we’ve held workshops with the neighbourhoods. Through those workshops, a few different ideas were developed in terms of how the neighbourhood would like to see the school sites redeveloped. And the consultants have taken all that information and have come up with a rendering of what they think meets the expectations of the neighbourhoods,” said Mary Salberg, Director of Community Development for the City of Swift Current. “It’s (the rendering) showing Ashley Park keeping the soccer pitch on the whole south-end and 13 single family houses with an internal park and a pathway system that takes you down to the creek. The next one is of Oman School. There is a linear park that goes through there and a path that will connect to the path near Chinook Golf Course. The renderings show the results of the workshops they held with the direct neighbourhoods”.
Following the Open House, information was collected and is being consolidated and used to finalize plans for the sites. Additionally, surveys will be available on the City’s website for those who were not able to make it to the Open House and can be found at www.swiftcurrent.ca.
