Swift Current drag racing season ends on a high note

The Swift Current Drag Racing Association (SCDRA) concluded the 2018 drag racing season on a high note with a well attended racing weekend at the Swift Current Airport.

This was the third racing weekend hosted by SCDRA during 2018 at the airport landing strip.

SCDRA President Greg McKay said 75 drivers participated in the Friday Fun Night on Aug. 24 and 140 drivers were competing on the drag strip during the regular race day, Aug. 25.

“Fantastic,” he said about the number of competitors. “It was a really good turnout.”

He was especially pleased with the number of drivers at the Friday Fun Night, which was intended to give anyone an opportunity to experience the thrill of drag racing without the competition. Drivers were able to test the ability and speed of their vehicles in a safe environment over a one-eight of a mile distance instead of the usual quarter mile on race day.

“Lots of the young people came out, because this is what we want,” he said. “We want the young people to come and race out there where it can be supervised and they can go as fast as they want and we can keep it under control and not on the streets.”

The racing action on Saturday included some of the fastest street legal vehicles in the province that competed in the Saskatchewan Fastest Street Car Shootout.

“We had 25 street cars from all over western Canada competing in the Saskatchewan Street Car Shootout,” he said.

The final day of racing on Aug. 26 had to be cancelled due to rain, but overall it was a good way for the SCDRA to conclude the season.

“We got all ready to go in the morning and then it rained just before we were starting to call cars up and then it let off a little bit and we had a meeting to decide what we were going to do, because the track was wet,” he said. “It rained again and we just ended up calling it at 11 o'clock. We said no more trying.”
