Richmound Lions holding annual charity barbecue

The Richmound Lions are calling in reinforcements and for the support of hungry, charitable Hatters as they plan a fundraiser this month. The club, based in the village of 154 people on the other side of the Saskatchewan boundary, supports causes in Medicine Hat, according to the Lion’s leader in the area.

“They say it takes a village to raise a child,” Gordon Ziegler said ahead of a charity barbecue planned for Sept. 15. “Well, it takes a village for us to have a barbeque.”

With fewer than 20 members, the event has become a regional affair, with help offered by Lions Clubs from Medicine Hat, the local Kiwanians, local hot-rodders and regional performers to provide live music.

Ziegler says it’s encouraging to see support from service clubs and the greater region, and the idea that giving in leads to getting back. His group regularly donates to endeavours in their area, says Ziegler, as well as to HALO rescue helicopter, the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter and Food Bank, and Operation Clothesline for diabetes. It has provided donations for flood relief of both southern Alberta and Fort McMurray. Ongoing support is focused on the Lions guide dog training program.

The event will be held at M&M Meats, 13th Avenue and College Drive, on Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pre-orders for delivery of burgers, dogs, kabobs and veggie options are required by Sept. 8 to bgziegler@gmail.com.
