Chinook SD Sports on the football field

Prairie Post (East Edition) - - Saskatchewan - BY VALERIE GORDON, ATHLETIC COORDINATOR

Gordon Wyant, Minister of Education, has proclaimed Oct. 7 – 13 as “School Sport Week”in Saskatchewan.

The SHSAA has made Wednesday “Coaches and Officials” recognition day, Thursday “Multi-Sport Participation” day and Friday is “School Team” recognition day. We are encouraging all of our SWAC schools to celebrate what is amazing about school sport.

A twitter/instragram/facebookscavenger hunt will start on Monday…if you get ‘tagged’, play along and then pass it on to someone else.

“The race is on…” Good Luck to our 16 SWAC cross country athletes (midget, junior and senior categories) who are off to the SHSAA Provincial Championship in Delisle on Saturday, Oct. 13.

You had your choice of football games to attendon Thursday, Oct 4. Gull Lake hosted Hanley in six-man action. Hanley is a very strong team and came away with a 71-22 victory over the Lions. Gull Lake will finish the regular season league with an away game to Hanley on Oct 12.

It was Shaunavon hosting Maple Creek “under the lights” last Thursday. In this latest battle of the SouthWest, Maple Creek was the winner (33-6) over the Shadows. On Oct. 12, Shaunavon will hit the road for a game in Fort Qu’Appelle and Maple Creek will host Lumsden.

The last regular season game for the SCCHS Colts was on Thursday, Oct. 4, at home, against Yorkton. They lost that game and finished the regular season with a 4-2 record.

The rest of the league plays on Tuesday while SCCHS finally get their bye. The most likely playoff scenario will have SCCHS in 3rd and they will host 6th place on Saturday, Oct. 13th. Tentative start time of 1:00 (but that needs to be confirmed).

SCCHS Colt and Arden soccer leagues are winding down. The SCCHS Arden soccer team’s game against MJ Vanier was postponed due to bad road conditions last week. They will make up this game on Tuesday, Oct. 9. Once the Ardens play, the league standings can be finalized for the playoffs. The SCCHS Colts were able to get their game in against MJ Vanier on Wednesday (amid a few snow drifts). The Colts won 10-0.

The Ardens and Colts should follow the same playoff rout. They won't play until the 13th in the semi-final, if they win that game they are off to the league final on the 16th of October.

The Sask High School Athletic Association has given the SouthWest two Regional soccer tournaments (first step in provincialplay downs). Swift Current Ardens are hosting an 11 vs 11 girls regional and Herbert boys are hosting a 7 vs 7 regional. Both tournaments take place Oct. 19-20. Plans are underway to merge the two tournaments and play all games in Swift Current (mainly on the Saturday).

The SWAC senior girls’ volleyball league continues. Week 3 league night in Gull Lake was cancelled due to weather. Hazlet and Eastend will go to Gull Lake on Oct. 25 for the makeup games. The other host site, Ponteix, was able to run their matches. It was Vanguard over Ponteix 2-0 (25-17, 25-6) and 2-0 (25-20, 2515).

There are no league games scheduled for the week of Oct 8. Next league action is on Oct. 16 in Eastend (Ponteix and Gull Lake attending) and Hodgeville (Hazlet is attending).

Looking ahead to our junior volleyball section/subsection playoffs, the dates have been finalized. Hills A boys will playoff in Herbert on Oct. 23. Oct. 24 playoffs include: Rolling Hills B boys at Irwin and Rolling Hills A girls playoff atSCCHS. October 25 playoffs are Rolling Hills B girls at Miller College (Pambrun) and Cypress Hills Boys in Fox Valley. Playoffs happening on Oct. 27 are Cypress Hills girls in Cabri, Whitemud girls in Eastend, Whitemud boys in Frontier. More details will follow closer to the event.
