Voters in two divisions in the R.M. of Swift Current No. 137 will be going to the polls next week to vote for candidates for councillor.

The 2018 municipal elections in Saskatchewan rural municipalities take place on Oct. 24. This year's elections are held for councillors representing evennumbered divisions in rural municipalities.

There are three even-numbered divisions in the R.M. of Swift Current, but the Division No. 5 seat became vacant earlier this year after the resignation of Ken Doerksen as councillor. Council decided at a regular meeting in March to leave that position vacant until the municipal elections in the fall.

There will only be elections for voters in Division No. 4 and 6. There was a single candidate in the other two divisions and they are therefore elected by acclamation.

Phillip Wall, who is the incumbent for Division No. 2, will return to council after the election. Michael (Butch) Gering was nominated for the vacant seat in Division No. 5 and he was unopposed.

Three candidates are standing for election in Division No. 4. The incumbent is Mark Carefoot. He is challenged by Jim Cadrain and Keith Prytula.

Voters will have a choice between two candidates in Division No. 6. Gale Nerada is the incumbent and the other candidate is Aaron Tait.

The polls will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 24. The polling station for Division No. 4 and 6 will both be at the R.M. of Swift Current municipal office, located at 2024 South Service Road West in Swift Current.

Voters must present identification to prove their identity and residence. The best option is a document with photo identification that was issued by a federal, provincial or municipal government authority in Canada with a voter's photograph, name and address, for example a valid Saskatchewan driver's licence. Otherwise a voter can present two pieces of identification. Both documents must include a person's name and at least one piece have to contain your address.
