WATERTON LAKES NATIONAL PARK TEN WINTER EXPERIENCES
Here are some tips and ideas to help you make the most of your visit to Waterton Lakes National Park this winter.
1. EXPLORE THE PARK ON SNOWSHOES
Snowshoeing is one of winter's most accessible activities Go for a short trip or a longer day, exploring the fescue prairies, aspen forests and beaver ponds along the Red Rock Parkway.
2. YOUR PERFECT PICNIC
There are several great locations to choose from to enjoy a winter picnic in Waterton
Enjoy a family picnic at the Maskinonge day-use area and search for wildlife tracks in the snow.
3. DISCOVER THE WISHBONE TRAIL
Enjoy a winter walk on the Wishbone trail
Listen for chickadees while you cross country ski or snowshoe the Wishbone Trail. Try it under the brightness of a full moon and listen for howling coyotes.
4. WILDLIFE WATCHING
Winter can be the best time for watching wildlife Watch for elk on the Blakiston Fan and count how many bighorn sheep and deer you see in the townsite. Remember to give wildlife plenty of space - it’s their home too!
5. STOP BY THE PEACE PARK PLAZA
The Peace Park Plaza, with new pathways, exhibits and interpretive nodes, opened in 2018
Visit the new Peace Park Plaza near the Marina and enjoy the views of Vimy Mountain across Upper Waterton Lake.
6. BIRD WATCHING
There may be fewer birds around in winter, but with no leaves on the trees, they’re easier to see!
Test your birding skills and see if you can find the elusive dippers at Cameron Falls.
7. STARGAZING
Waterton Lakes National Park and Glacier National Park (USA) are recognized by the International Dark-Sky Association as an International Dark Sky Park
Star gaze this winter! Sip a hot chocolate while searching for the Big Dipper and Orion the Hunter constellations.
8. WINDY WATERTON!
Wind is a noticeable and important element of the climate in Waterton Lakes National Park
Walk up to the Prince of Wales hill and feel the force of winter’s winds (often they are warm chinook winds).
9. FATBIKING
A fat bike is a bicycle with over-sized tires on wide rims Do you own a fat bike? Try it out on the Red Rock Parkway or along a designated biking trails such as the Crandell Loop trail.
10. WINTER CAMPING
Pass Creek picnic site offers a sheltered winter campground Experience winter camping at the Pass Creek picnic site and roast marshmallows over a crackling fire. Please note that spaces are limited.
