Swift Current & District Music Festival now accepting registrations

- CONTRIBUTED

The Swift Current Music Festival reminds music teachers, parents and students that online registrations are now being accepted at www.scmusicfestival.ca.

The 90th Swift Current Music Festival is being prepared for upcoming dates in March and April, 2018.

This is a competitive amateur festival for children of all ages and all disciplines: piano, voice, musical theatre, guitar, strings, school bands and ensembles, instrumental solos, choirs, classroom music and speech arts.

Last year 276 entries involved 1400 students and over $6800 in scholarships were awarded. The generosity of individuals, local businesses and service clubs makes this festival possible.

Students come from across the city and surrounding communities and we are grateful for this support. It demonstrates that our community understands how important music education and performance opportunities are to the children.

A list of donors and sponsors’ advertising will be updated on the website. There is also a donor letter for your use if you have not already been contacted and would still like to contribute.

We would like to acknowledge our long-time partnerships with private music teachers, Chinook & Catholic School Divisions, the Art Gallery of Swift Current and all other venues that have been so readily available.

The online registration with direct payment and our own website has greatly improved and streamlined the whole system and it is far more cost effective.

It improves our ability to schedule hundreds of entries in a much shorter period of time and makes information available to the public at any time.

GOOD START: The second half of the 2018-19 Stars for Saskatchewan concert series, which is organized by the Swift Current Arts Council, started with a performance by Halifax singer-songwriter Erin Costelo at the Living Sky Casino Event Centre, Jan. 18. She used her striking voice to move seamlessly between different musical genres. Costelo released her fifth album, Sweet Marie, in the fall, and it is currently in 18th spot on the Euro-Americana chart. The next Stars for Saskatchewan concert on Feb. 5 will feature the Ladom Ensemble from Toronto. The group performs a unique blend of acoustic chamber and world music through the use of piano, cello, accordion and percussion.
