Swift Current 17/18U Volleyball Club turns in golden weekend performance
The Swift Current Junior SunDogs Volleyball Club hosted a 17/18U women's invitational tournament at Swift Current Comprehensive High School, March 23.
Eight teams were in action at the tournament and the Junior SunDogs 17U team claimed gold after a three-set championship final against the 18U team from the Medicine Hat Volleyball Club (MHVC).
The SunDogs had a 5-2 record after the round robin with wins against the Queen City Volleyball Club 18U Black Ice (25-16, 26-28), Battlefords Volleyball Club 18U Wildfire (25-18, 25-23), Weyburn Rush (25-21, 25-11), Taber Wham (25-14, 25-7), and the South East Alberta Volleyball Club Broncos (25-20, 25-27).
The two losses were against the MHVC 18U (23-25, 22-25) and the Saskatoon JCVC Big Red (16-25, 23-25). During the playoffs the SunDogs won the quarter final against the 18U Wildfire (25-22, 25-14) and the semi-final against the Broncos (25-16, 25-17).
The SunDogs then won their home tournament with a three-set victory against the MHVC 18U (2515, 16-25, 15-10). The SunDogs are coached by Shawn Hiebert and Michael Ruus.
The 15U Women's Black did well in a tournament in Yorkton as they finished 7th out of 32 teams. They went undefeated on Saturday, 4-0.
On Sunday, U15 beat Yorton to move up into the top Tier. In the playoffs, they lost in two heartbreaking games to to the JCVC Crush who we played in the provincial final last year. The score was 24-26 in both games.
Swift Current then lost to the Huskie club which moved us to the 7th and 8th game against the Saskatoon Smash. U15Black lost the first one, then rebounded to win the next two handily to give Swift Current 7th in Tier 1.
That is 6 spots better than Swift Current finshed in Sask Cup 1. Overall their weekend record was 6-2.
