SCCHS badminton squad earn medals

The SCCHS grade 9 badminton team attended the junior Ponteix tournament on Saturday March 9. All 7 teams made it to the playoffs, and 4 teams came home with medals.

Boys Singles – Navjeet Singh finished 2nd in his pool with a 2-1 record. In the quarter final game, he defeated Gull Lake 21-5 and 21-5 which advanced him to the semi-final. Singh lost a close match to Ponteix, 21-15, 13-21, and 15-21.

Girls Singles – Chloe Shumaker finished 2nd in her pool with a 3-1 record. Hillary Lacelle finished 1st in her pool with a 3-0 record. Shumaker and Lacelle crossed over to play each other in the semi-final. Lacelle won 2115, and 21-17. The final was a very close match. Lacelle defeated Kincaid 23-21 and 22-20, and was awarded the gold medal in girls singles.

Boys Doubles – Carson Schapansky and Brady Watson finished 2nd in their pool with a 2-1 record. In the quarterfin­al, they defeated Ponteix 21-9 and 2116. In the semi-final, the boys battled hard, but lost in 3 to Gravelbour­g. (2115, 20-22, and 16-21).

Girls Doubles – Kirsten Hanson and Hailey Carlson finished 1st in their pool with a 3-0 record. In the playoffs, the girls played three different teams from Ponteix. They won their quarter final 21-7 and 21-9. They won their semi-final 21-5 and 21-6. Unfortunat­ely, they were unable to defeat the 3rd team from Ponteix in the final match. Hanson/Carlson were awarded the silver medal in girls doubles.

Mixed Doubles – Kadence Pavely and Connor Frohlich finished 1st in the single mixed doubles pool with a record of 5-0. Melodie Torales and MuNay Htoo finished 2nd in the mixed doubles pool with a record of 4-1. The two SCCHS teams met again in the final. Pavely/Frohlich defeated Torales/Htoo for the gold medal, 21-13 and 21-17. Torales/Htoo were awarded the silver medal in mixed doubles.

The next action for the SCCHS badminton team will be on Saturday March 16th. The team will be attending the senior tournament­s in Rosetown and Ponteix.
