The SWAC teams were very busy this weekend.

The SWAC senior girls and boys basketball leagues wrapped up. We had athletes at the SHSAA provincial championships for curling and wrestling. Plus, all of our 1A-3A basketball teams participated in the first level of SHSAA provincial basketball playoffs.

SENIOR BASKETBALL LEAGUE

The championship games for the SWAC senior basketball league were played onTues., March 5. The senior boy’s league had the SC Jr Colts hosting the Shaunavon Shadows in the championship game. The Colts won the league title by a score of 76-56. This was the first time that SCCHS has won the boy’s league championship. The senior girl’s final was hosted by the Shaunavon Silhouettes. The visiting SCCHS JrArdens lost an exciting, well played final to the hometown team (43-38).

This is the 8th year in a row that the Silhouettes have won the league title. In the senior boy’s consolation games, Frontier boys host Gull Lake boys. It was a very close game, but Frontier prevailed and won by a score of 57-54. The senior girl’s consolation game between Herbert girls and Maple Creek girls was canceled.

SHSAA PROVINCIAL GIRLS CURLING

Maple Creek and Gull Lake girls curling teams competed at the SHSAA Provincial tournament in Nipawin on March 8/9. Maple Creek opened the pool round robin with a decisive 11-3 win over Nipawin.

Back-to-back losses to Weyburn (9-7) and Allan (6-4) eliminated Maple Creek from the competition. Gull Lake had two early wins in the round robin: 8-6 over Wadena and 6-3 over Spiritwood. They lost their last round robin game to Yorkton (8-5). That left Gull Lake in a 3 - way tie in their pool. After the tie break was applied, Yorkton was #1 in the pool and Gull Lake and Spiritwood played in a tie break Saturday morning for the last playoff position. It was a very close game, but Gull Lake lost (7-5) and their run at the provincial championship was over. They may not have come home with any hardware, but these were two very skilled and well-coached teams.

SHSAA PROVINCIAL WRESTLING

The SCCHS Colts and Arden wrestling team took part in the SHSAA provincial wrestling championship in Regina. The team had outstanding finishes. Five of the ten SCCHS participating wrestlers were in medal matches. Jordan Lamontange (62kg) finished 4thand Elijah Harden (77kg) won bronze.
