Ghostown Blues Open House - May 25

-

On May 25, Ghostown Blues is throwing its doors wide-open and inviting the public in to see what all the buzz is about with regards to Saskatchewan's most unique Bed and Breakfast, as part of a kick-off to Saskatchewan Tourism week which runs May 26-June 1.

A property made up of pioneer cabins taken off the prairie, covered sheep wagons from days gone by, and the occasional thresherman's wagon, and vintage truck thrown in for good measure, it's a place where those who love the look and feel of the old west, will definitely feel right at home. A place where the history of the buildings and wagons, is matched with beautiful antiques and luxurious bedding, all wrapped up in a prairie setting.

"I'm hosting this Open House for the locals," says owner Greg Hisey. "For those who are local who possibly haven't been here yet, it's a chance for them to see what's in their own backyard, and for those who are thinking of booking, whether for an overnight stay, or for a family reunion, group, or wedding, it's a chance to check out what we have to offer."

Normally closed to the public, in order to respect the privacy of the guests who are staying there, Hisey says there are many folks who drive into the yard, hoping to get a tour, and many in Maple Creek, who have never even seen what he has to offer. "It's the nature of the business," says Hisey. "Someone who lives in Maple Creek, isn't going to book a night's stay here, so having this event gives me an opportunity to do something for the locals, along with some of the people we endorse and partner with."

With an aim to furthering collaboration, far from the "fast-food tourism" that has cropped up in other destinations, Hisey has partnered up with a number of local businesses and personalities to join him in making the day a great one. From The Shop Bakery & Deli, who will be supplying the food up for offer, to Cowboy Country Magazine, who will be on-hand to serve up some copies of their magazine.

There will also be freshly roasted Cowboy Coffee from The Daily Grind, and live music by local performer Wade Pollock. Other collaboration partners include: Cowtown Kids Toy & Candy, Historic Reesor Ranch, The Rockin Horse, Jimmies Pizza, Over the Hill Antiques, as well as the many activities in Cypress Hills Park.

"We will open the many buildings and accommodations that fill the property, and open them for viewing" adds Hisey.

Hisey also has an extra special treat for those, like him, who love antiques, as he plans on bringing out for viewing some of his own personal high value antiques, with special attention made to the telling of their history.

"Before Studebaker made cars, they were a wagon maker," says Hisey. "They made a smaller version (pulled by goats) that became a popular boys’ farm wagon. The Southbend Toy company took over making them in 1920 and sold them through the Sears Catalogue. As kids will do, nearly all of them were destroyed, and there are very few left of these Studebaker Jr. wagons. The ones I have acquired over the years are in exceptional condition."

The Ghostown Blues B&B Open House takes place May 25th from noon until 5 p.m., with a concert that evening by Patrick Alexandre & The Nor-west Players at 7:30 p.m., a concert that will also be filmed by Sasktel Max for an upcoming special.
