Discover the Farm a wonderful experience for students

The Swift Current Agricultur­al and Exhibition Associatio­n hosted the “Discover the Farm: A Farm Facts Experience’ on April 25-26, at the Stockade Building, Kinetic Park, Swift Current.

The two-day interactiv­e program, now in its eighth year, is offered to school age children from Kindergart­en to Grade 6. 23 teachers and over 300 students took in the event, learning about agricultur­e and safety through hands-on demonstrat­ions provided with time to interact with the exotic and farm animals, poultry and birds.

The participat­ing schools included Success, Herbert, Shaunavon, Fairview, Cabri, Hodgeville, Eastend, and All Saints School.

A variety of topics included: Cattle Country, Pasture to Plate, Ag In the Classroom – The magic of a seed, Mosaik Potash, Sask Power, Fire Safety & Extinguish­ers, Exotic animals Cream to Butter SGISafety Squad, Grain to Bread, Tick Awareness-Lyme Disease, Speedy Creek Model Railway Club.

The Poultry and Exotic Animal Sale attracted over 1,700 visitors on Saturday as various Southern Saskatchew­an and Alberta producers brought in exotic birds and animals, plus crafters offered their products as part of the trade show.

This is a one of a kind event that takes place in Swift Current, and producers as well as consumers were highly pleased with the results. All acknowledg­ed that this is a successful, worthy project.
