- CONTRIBUTED

Swift Current was the site of the SHSAA Provincial Badminton tournament on Saturday.

Our commissioner (Janna Walker) and her crew, did a wonderful job hosting the event. Top badminton players from across the province were in attendance to vie for Provincial Gold.

Frank Chou (Fox Valley) was the SouthWest qualifier in boys singles, but an injury forced him to withdraw prior to the provincial event. Garrett Mitchell (Frontier) had placed third at Regionals, so he was able to fill the open spot.

This was Garrett’s first appearance at a provincial badminton tournament. He was in a very competitive pool (the eventual silver/bronze medalists were in his pool). He had losses to Centennial (10-21, 16-21), Yellow Grass (18-21, 16-21) and went three sets with North Battleford (21-18, 11-21, 24-26). Garrett had a great showing and gained lots of experience. I suspect we will see him back at a provincial tournament sometime in his future.

Track and field sectional entries are due this week. All sectional/district meets will take place at the SCCHS facility. The same schedule will be used for all three meets. That schedule will be posted on the SWAC district page (on the SHSAA site).

The BLUE section meet was on May 22 and the WHITE section meet was May 23. Districts are on Wednesday, May 29. SHSAA provincials are in Moose Jaw this year (June 7-8).
