Chief receives commendation for work in overseeing Sept. 11, 2017 fire
In the evening of Sept. 11, 2017, a fire call was received for a grass fire located north of CFB Suffield.
By Sept. 12, the fire had consumed over 90,000 acres and impacted residents, producers, and communities.
Glen Durand, Special Areas Fire Chief, coordinated the on-scene response as Scene Commander.
By the end of this catastrophic grassfire, over 16 fire services with 42 apparatuses had responded.
In addition to the fire departments (staffed by local volunteer firefighters), Durand worked with the Emergency Operations Center in Hanna to coordinate the response of mutual aid partners, support equipment, and other responding groups.
For his personal efforts responding to the Bindloss grassfire, Durand was honored with a formal Base Commander Commendation.
Presented by Lieutenant-Colonel Onieu, Base Commander for CFB Suffield, this Commendation recognized Durand’s skillful coordination of the onscene response to the grassfire.
Durand’s personal initiative, leadership and decisionmaking during Sept. 11-12, 2017 were all specifically highlighted.
Durand’s personal efforts were recognized as contributing significantly to the mitigation of damage to the community, with his work exemplifying the best of his profession.
