The 2nd an­nual out­door Ribfest took place in the Liv­ing Sky Casino park­ing lot in Swift Cur­rent, Aug. 2-4. The event was hosted by the casino in part­ner­ship with the Dr. Noble Ir­win Re­gional Health­care Foun­da­tion. The sale of busi­ness spon­sor­ships for the event raised close to $20,000 for the Health­care Foun­da­tion's Close to the Heart cam­paign, which aims to raise a to­tal of $350,000 for the pur­chase of a new dig­i­tal mam­mog­ra­phy unit for the Cy­press Re­gional Hos­pi­tal. Ribfest pa­trons were able to savour south­ern-style bar­beque pre­pared by cham­pion rib­bers Prairie Smoke & Spice BBQ from Pi­lot Butte and Border­town BBQ from Lloy­d­min­ster. Celebrity judges tried out the of­fer­ings from both rib­bers on Aug. 4, and gave the nod to Border­town BBQ in the award cat­e­gories of best ribs and best sauce. Ribfest visi­tors could vote on­line for their favourite rib­ber, and the peo­ple's choice award went to Prairie Smoke & Spice BBQ.
