Taking place at Police Point Park in Medicine Hat
Northern river otters in the South Saskatchewan River near Police Point Park – really?
Yes, they are here and have been since late last year. This occurrence is particularly noteworthy because it appears there are no historical records for them in our area and current field guides and wildlife experts indicate the prairies are outside their normal range.
Otters are a member of the weasel family, which includes species that can be seen regularly in or near Medicine Hat such as least weasel, long-tailed weasel,
American mink, and American badger.
Our otter group consists of 3 individuals and was seen as recently as last week.
On Sunday, March 1, the Interpretive Program will lead a walk to try and observe these water-loving jesters of the animal world. The plan is to meet at the Nature Centre at 2 p.m. and proceed from there.
If the otters are frequenting a location better accessible from elsewhere in the Park, we will post signs along the Park road indicating where to meet.
Because this will likely be an extended trip to the far reaches of the Park, it is not recommended for young children or anyone with mobility issues; we also request that dogs be left at home so the otters are not disturbed. Please be prepared for mud, snow, ice, and rough terrain.
Binoculars are highly recommended, and, of course, cameras.
