Canada battling U.S., pandemic

- By Dale Ferrel

Yes, this grumpy old man is about to harshly condemn our Federal government for its initial lack of vigilance and anticipation regarding the Covid 19 pandemic.

That said, I congratulate them for their latest efforts to get it right! Trudeau finally listened to people who offered excellent information and acted on it.

Trudeau’s worst problem now is the lack of proper action by the mental midget who is trashing the U.S.A. while under the guise of being their commander in chief.

His tweeted conniptions, lies and excuses are doing little to properly stem the tide. They are very close to us, they are much bigger and they will suffer terribly from his inaction on Covid 19! That will invariably slop over into our country with devastating effect!

So what could Canada have done better? The glaring answer to that is the action taken by the country of Taiwan. By pairing and analyzing electronic health and travel records of its residents and taking immediate emergency measures they sharply limited the corona-virus. Although only 130 kms. from China, by population adjusted comparison, they have 70 % fewer cases than us and they have nearly 3 million visitors from mainland China a year! As Canada struggles to flatten the curve of infection; Taiwan has no curve at all!

Taiwanese authorities were vigilant, relentless and acted swiftly. They have been on the alert for epidemics since the 2003 SARS outbreak.

The Taiwanese began boarding flights from Wuhan, China as early as December 31, 2019. Some flights were banned and visitors visas cancelled. Shortly thereafter all foreign travellers were banned from entry. Health questionnaires that passengers could scan using a QR code on their phones while their planes were yet to arrive worked well. Those deemed to be at risk were self isolated and tracked by their cellphones. False reports were subject to fines. This prevented close contact at airports and fast tracking through immigration. They were quick off of the mark to secure protective equipment before the demand increased.

Price gouging was made illegal. Many patients in isolation were given supplies like thermometers, hand wipes and food to allow them to properly self-monitor while staying put.

Our bleeding heart left-wingers in Canada have taken privacy concerns far beyond what is reasonable.

Thus, we are not in a position to do what Taiwan did and will pay a terrible price for that! Another major problem is that in Canada every province has its own health records system and licensing for doctors.

The Canadian Civil Liberties Association thinks that’s just wonderful! I am positive that the large majority of Canadians congruous that if they have nothing to hide, they should not worry about monitoring to vastly improve their lives. Privacy has literally prevented our stopping of this plague!

I must cite another example of how binge overreaction to privacy is costing us millions of dollars and considerable hardship. It would be totally possible to spend a couple hundred dollars to equip every vehicle in Canada with technology to locate, track and even shut it down. Car dealers have been using it for years! No more stolen vehicle problems. No more vehicles stolen or otherwise used for crime. No more problems locating accidents or vehicle occupants in distress. We already have tracking on our cell phones anyway. So who would be offended? You got it; the left wing nut cases and the criminals! All vehicles sold, registered or insured could be equipped. Any owner skirting the law would be subject to a $1,000 fine and their vehicle impounded until properly equipped.

In closing; the good news is that Trudeau was finally forced to turn back asylum seekers who were illegally flooding across our boarders outside of official boarder points.
