Prairie Post (East Edition) - - FARM NEWS - Contributed

The Western Canadian Wheat Growers are celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2020. As a part of their celebration activities, the history of the past 25 years has been described in a book, “Warriors for Wheat”. Over the next several weeks, each chapter will be highlighted.

In Chapter 1 – AstheCrowFlies…Ready forBattle, the history of the Crow Rate is examined. Originally intended to help move wheat to market, the Crow Rate reached the end of its usefulness at a time when the federal government was attempting to reduce the deficit.

The Wheat Growers brought forward strong policy that supported market driven solutions. As the President and Directors changed in 1998 at the annual convention, the Board focused on three priorities: 1) farmers having the option of using or not using the Wheat

Board; 2) creating incentives and penalties for the grain transportation system to meet commitments on moving grain; and 3) ending international trade subsidies.

“Warriors for Wheat” is a testament to the many people that have moved been actively engaged and ensured that these priorities moved forward over the next several years,” stated Clayton Kotylak, Saskatchewan Director.

Celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2020, the Western Canadian Wheat Growers Association is a voluntary farmer-run advocacy organization dedicated to developing public policy solutions that strengthen the profitability and sustainability of farming, and the agricultural industry as a whole.
