Foremost looking forward to town's annual community garage sale

Look out for balloons while you're heading through Foremost later this month, as they're likely to lead to some new treasures.

August 12th marks the Foremost Community Garage Sale, which has been going on for about ten years, said Foremost resident and organizer Jill Bernhart, who has been part of the garage sale for the past six or seven years.

“There's not really much for organization, you just get together with a couple of people and say, ‘okay, yeah, August 12, is gonna work,” said Bernhart. “It's basically left up to the people themselves. We say 10 to six, but if they weren't open at nine, that's fine. And if they want to quit at eight o'clock, or four o'clock, that's fine, too.”

There's no required registration, said Bernhart. Anyone in Foremost looking to take part simply needs to put out their sign and their balloons day of, and be ready to sell.

“Last year, we had two days, we had Friday and Saturday, the Saturday is a bust, it's not worth bothering with. So we decided that just Friday would be fine,” said Bernhart.

The idea of the community sale is to help attract others to the community, said Bernhart, as well as allow for residents to make a little extra money.

“Foremost is a very small community,” said Bernhart. “So if we're getting people to come from outside, it makes a whole lot more sense to have more than one garage sale to go to. I don't think anybody expects to get rich. But you get rid of a lot of stuff.”

One of the bigger sales on the day will be the Foremost Historical Society, which is hoping to help fund the operation of the building over the winter. The cause is one that many people in the community are rallying around.

“I know a lot of people that would have had their own sale just donated their things to them,” said Bernhart.

In previous years, they've seen visitors from throughout the region visiting for the garage sale, and Bernhart is hopeful to see the same again, having put up posters in many of the neighbouring towns as well as online.

“Like the posters say, come for the bargain. Stay for the visit,” said Bernhart.
