Parents charged in connection with assault of six-week-old infant

Lethbridge Police have charged a father and mother in connection with the assault and sexual assault of their six-week-old daughter.

On January 18, 2023 police were called to a north side home to check on the welfare of a six-week-old baby girl after receiving informatio­n she was being abused. Upon arrival officers located the baby in medical distress.

Both the mother and father were present in the home. EMS subsequent­ly transporte­d the baby to hospital. Her injuries were found to be extensive and she is currently in critical condition.

Investigat­ion determined the baby had been assaulted and sexually assaulted multiple times over the past six weeks.

A 52-year-old male is charged with aggravated assault, sexual assault, sexual interferen­ce and failing to provide the necessarie­s of life. A 31-year-old woman is charged with failing to provide the necessarie­s of life. Police are unable to identify the parents in order to protect the identity of the victim.

The Lethbridge Police Service has received numerous messages from the community in support of the six-week-old baby girl who remains in hospital.

Many have asked for an update on the infant’s condition and how the public can help her.

While LPS is limited by privacy restrictio­ns on what informatio­n can be disclosed, police can advise the infant remains in critical condition in Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary.

She is receiving the highest level of care and all her needs are currently being met by her caregivers.

The Lethbridge Police thanks everyone who has reached out in support of the baby.

* Lethbridge Police charge male with aggravated assault

Lethbridge Police have charged a 37-year-old man in connection with an incident where a male was assaulted in the street and sustained serious injuries

On Jan. 16, 2023 at approximat­ely 7:47 p.m. police responded to a report of an injured male along the 700 block of 5 Avenue South.

The 28-year-old male reported he had been assaulted and was transporte­d to hospital where his condition deteriorat­ed.

He was subsequent­ly admitted for treatment of serious head injuries.

Following further investigat­ion police obtained surveillan­ce footage from earlier in the day that showed a male approach the victim in the area of 7 Street South and 4 Avenue South and strike him with a weapon multiple times.

The subject and victim are known to one another and the incident was targeted. The subject was located and arrested without incident on Jan. 22, 2023.

Ryan Neale Nepoose, 37, of Lethbridge, is charged with one count of aggravated assault. Following a Judicial Interim Release hearing he was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court January 26, 2023.

* Police investigat­ing pedestrian collision involving transit bus

Lethbridge Police are investigat­ing an incident where a pedestrian was struck by a transit bus in a downtown crosswalk.

On January 14, 2023 at approximat­ely 4:42 p.m. police responded to a report of a pedestrian collision at the intersecti­on of 5 Avenue and 5 Street South. Investigat­ion determined a 39-year-old female was crossing in the crosswalk when a bus that had been travelling westbound along 5 Avenue South proceeded to turn southbound and collided with the pedestrian.

EMS attended and transporte­d the victim to hospital in stable condition.

Sun glare is believed to have been a factor. Investigat­ion is ongoing.
