Southern Alberta’s agriculture community will gather next week for the Irrigated Crop Production Update, a one-day conference focused on all things irrigation. Previously organized by the Government of Alberta, Lethbridge College has assumed responsibility for the conference and has brought together a wide variety of organizations to collaborate on planning for the event.

The Irrigated Crop Production Update takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26 at the Sandman Signature Lethbridge Lodge. Tickets are on sale now for anyone interested in attending the event.

“This is really a one-stop opportunity to learn about not only the current state of irrigation in the province, but also to look at where it is going in the future,” says Dr. Willemijn Appels, Mueller Applied Research Chair in Irrigation Science, Lethbridge College. “There are many important issues that need discussion and innovation as the agriculture industry focuses on sustainability and the need to feed people while maximizing the use of our resources.”

The organizing committee for the event includes members from Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation, Alberta Pulse Growers, Alberta Wheat and Barley, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Bennen Farms, Canola Council of Canada, Lethbridge College, Plants Dig Soil, Quattro Farms, Stamp Seeds, and the

University of Lethbridge.

Attendees will take part in sessions that focus on the latest irrigation research projects and initiatives of Lethbridge College, Farming Smarter, the University of Lethbridge, and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada; nutrient and pest management on irrigated acres; modernization and expansion of irrigation in the province; irrigation research in Saskatchewan; updates on irrigation infrastructure, water delivery, reservoir and snowpack conditions; and farmer panellists’ perspectives on irrigation and soil erosion management.
