The Swift Current Fire Department's new Deputy Chief of Prevention Dean Diguer was introduced to council members by Fire Chief Ryan Hunter at a regular City council meeting, March 6.

“We're very lucky to have him,” Hunter said. “He has extensive knowledge in incident command, inspections, investigations and the EOC, which is the emergency operations centre. So I'm extremely pleased that he's part of the team and I believe that the City is going to be extremely pleased.”

Diguer grew up in Swift Current and still has family here. He is therefore pleased to be back in his hometown.

“It's good to be home,” he said. “It's nice to be close to family and nice to be back in a familiar workspace.”

He started his firefighting career in Swift Current as an auxiliary firefighter. Thereafter he was a member of the Yellowknife Fire Department for six years.

He then returned to Swift Current to work as a full-time firefighter for just over four years. Thereafter he moved back to Yellowknife and worked the past eight years for the Government of the Northwest Territories in different roles, including as assistant fire marshal and emergency management officer.

His goal in his role at the Swift Current Fire Department is to continue with the functions and activities that are already in place.

“I'm lucky that the prevention and inspection programs at Swift Current Fire are pretty well established and have been effective,” he said. “So that makes my life a lot easier and I just have to continue carrying on with that.”
