The Municipal District of Taber will be hosting a ground-breaking ceremony for Phase 1 of the Horsefly Regional Emergency Spillway project: One of seven key flood mitigation projects outlined in the Southern Regional Stormwater Management Plan.

WHY: This is an historic event with over a decade in the making. Rarely do so many municipalities and Irrigation Districts across southern Alberta collaborate on such an important project to help make communities more resilient to flooding. The Southern Regional Stormwater Drainage Committee formed nearly 12 years ago to develop a long-term solution to the ongoing threat of stormwater runoff events. Partners of the drainage committee include the Towns of Coaldale, Taber, and Bow Island, the Village of Barnwell, the City of Medicine Hat, the Counties of Lethbridge, 40 Mile, and Cypress, the newly amalgamated St. Mary River and Taber Irrigation Districts (SMRID), and the Municipal District of Taber as the managing partner.

HOW: Funding for the project was made possible, in part by the Government of Canada under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program and the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund, also in part by the Government of Alberta under the Alberta Community and Resilience Program, SMRID, and by municipal partners of the Southern Regional Stormwater Drainage Committee.

WHEN: Friday, March 17th at 1:00 PM WHERE: At the MD of Taber’s Operations & Maintenance Facility located 1 km west of Taber on Highway 3 (171027 AB-3 Barnwell).
