Two-time provincial basketball champion signs with the Kodiaks
The Lethbridge College Kodiaks women’s basketball team has added a center from Raymond to their roster. Gabby Graves, a two-time provincial champion from the Raymond Comet program, will be joining the team for the upcoming season.
She has enrolled in the nursing program at the college with the goal of obtaining her bachelor’s degree. “Being accepted into their nursing program early also provided me with the assurance that I was pursuing a program I was interested in,” says Graves. “I have heard many great things about the College’s Nursing program and have been considering playing for them (unofficially) for a few years now.”
The second day of a talent identification camp left a strong impression on Graves, as it allowed her more time to connect with the coaches and other Kodiaks players. The atmosphere she experienced in the gym during the identification camps was what ultimately led her to decide to sign with the Kodiaks.
Graves has a diverse sports background, having also played rugby, head coach Ken McMurray believes the toughness she acquired through rugby has translated well to the basketball court, where she excels as a rebounder, finisher, and defender.
“One of the things I have noticed most about Gabby is her great attitude,” says McMurray. “She’s hardworking and a great teammate, and she will fit in perfectly with the Kodiaks family.”
Graves is enthusiastic about continuing to play the sport she loves alongside her new teammates. She is also eager to take on the challenge of expanding her skill set, including her midrange shot, rebounding, screening, and physicality.
“I hope to contribute to our team’s success this season and help us reach our full potential,” says Graves. “I wouldn’t be here without the support of my parents, teachers, and coaches, who have all played a role in shaping me into the player I am today.”
The women’s basketball team will face the Ambrose University Lions in their home opener at 6 p.m. on October 20th in the Val Matteotti Gymnasium.
