Swift Current Legion’s 2023 Poppy Campaign set to begin

- Contributed

The Poppy Campaign is a yearly campaign ran by the Royal Canadian Legion. The campaign runs from the last Friday of October (27 October, 2023) until the 11th of November. Canadians across the country wear a Poppy as a visual pledge to honour Canada’s veterans and to remember the fallen who gave their lives while serving our country. While Poppies are distributed freely to all Canadians who wish to wear one, the Royal Canadian Legion does graciously accept donations to the Poppy Fund. The Poppy Campaign is a local initiative and is conducted by Legion Branches in cities, towns, and communities from coast to coast.

All donations that are collected during the campaign are held in trust at the Branch level and the funds are used to directly support veterans and their families within the community and to help ensure that Canadian’s never forget the service and sacrifices made by our veterans. The yearly campaign would not happen without the efforts of the Legionaries who volunteer countless hours to help distribute poppies to their communities. The volunteers are the backbone of the campaign.

In addition, the Legion is ever grateful for the efforts and support of the various partners at both the local and national level, who welcome our members and the Poppy Boxes into their locations and businesses. Royal Canadian Legion Branch 56 thanks all those who wear a Poppy and make donations to the Poppy Trust Fund.

The Legion will have the Pay Tribute Boxes again this year at select businesses. These are Poppy Boxes that people can make donations via debit and credit card (Tap/ Interact). Done via a partnership between the Legion and HSBC Bank Canada.

People can get poppies from Poppy Boxes at select businesses in Swift Current and the Legion Office. Poppy Stories- a new online incentive from Dominion Command (Federal Level) of the Royal Canadian Legion. People can scan a lapel poppy on their mobile device on poppystories.ca. In doing so it will take the user to a page that introduces them to a fallen Canadian soldier and tells that individuals story of service and sacrifice

People can make donations to the Poppy Trust Fund online via the Dominion Command website.
