Canada Grains Council welcomes introduction of Bill C-359
The Canada Grains Council (CGC) welcomes Bill C-359, An Act to amend the Feeds Act, the Seeds Act and the
Pest Control Products Act (provisional registration and approval), introduced by Kody Blois, MP for Kings–Hants and
Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food.
The private member’s bill proposes expedited regulatory approvals for innovative agricultural products, including seed varieties, feed ingredients and crop protection products. These products, having already gained full regulatory approval in at least two trusted jurisdictions, will undergo streamlined regulatory processes, removing unnecessary delays in their introduction to the Canadian market.
"The adoption of new technologies such as innovative seed varieties, novel crop chemistries, precision agriculture, and enhanced nutrient management practices has played a significant role in positioning Canadian farmers as global leaders," explains Erin Gowriluk, president of the CGC.
"The potential benefits of improved access to these products and technologies are evident. This bill could enhance the adoption of crop protection products and technologies, empowering our farmers to further enhance productivity and contribute to sustainable food production practices. The continued streamlining of the regulatory process is strengthening our agricultural sector."
CGC applauds MP Blois for his vision and willingness to introduce this bill to enhance Canadian farmer competitiveness. Additionally, CGC calls upon the Government of Canada’s departments and agencies to take the necessary steps to address the issues highlighted within the bill, aligning with their responsibilities to foster agricultural innovation and economic growth.
