Lethbridge Legion launch Poppy campaign and Veterans week activities

-

–The Royal Canadian Legion General Stewart Branch is pleased to hold a media availability at the branch to discuss the 2023 Poppy Campaign and other Remembrance related activities leading up to the Remembrance Day services. Glenn Miller will hold a media scrum at 11:00 am 25 October in the board room at the General Stewart Branch No 4.

“As keepers of Remembrance we want to ensure citizens proudly show their appreciation of the sacrifices for the freedom we enjoy today by having them “just wear a poppy” throughout the campaign.” says Glenn Miller, Communications Co-Chair of the General Stewart Branch. Poppies are always free, and donations can be made online or at the branch. The public will first become available on Tag Day, Saturday 28 October. Youth groups will be out in the community in the morning offering poppies to the general public and cadets will be out again at various businesses in the afternoon. Business boxes will be distributed starting Sunday by volunteers.

“The Legion encourages people to wear a poppy as a visual pledge to never forget those who served and sacrificed.” Says Jeff Alden Chair of the Poppy committee. The branch also has a number of other remembrance and poppy related merchandise including our popular poppy centers. Applications for our Veteran Banners are also being taken with a cutoff of 30 June 2024.

A flag raising ceremony to mark the start of Veteran’s Week will occur at Lethbridge City Hall at 11:00 am. 3 November. This will also include a banner located near the Cenotaph that temporarily marks 4th Avenue as Veteran’s Avenue.

We thank the Lethbridge Hurricanes for their continued long time support by hosting Military Appreciation Night at their home game on the evening of the 10th November with a special ceremony at center ice to mark the 75th anniversary of United Nations Peacekeeping.

Remembrance Services will be conducted at the same time again this year at the Cenotaph with a scheduled flyover of a 1952 Harvard Mark IV flown by local owner Geoffrey Brayne.

An indoor service will take place at the Lethbridge and District Exhibition new Agri hub facility. The public is asked to be in attendance by 10:40 am at each location. The Legion will have an electronic program available on its website for download www.lethbridgelegion.ca
