Honouring Rodeo Legends: A remarkable day at Vauxhall Rodeo Grounds – Vauxhall Ag Society fundraising for new building

- Contributed

The Vauxhall Rodeo Committee and Vauxhall Ag Society organized a memorable event this past weekend, marking a significant milestone in the history of the Vauxhall Rodeo Grounds. There was a surprise dedication ceremony, honouring two distinguished individuals whose contributions have been nothing short of exceptional.

In a heartfelt tribute, the Vauxhall Rodeo Grounds Arena was officially dedicated to the legendary Malcolm Jones. With a successful rodeo career boasting four Canadian Bareback Championships and four National Finals Rodeo qualifications, Jones was also a former Chairman of the Canadian Rodeo Cowboys Association and was inducted into the Canadian Professional Rodeo Hall of Fame in 1999.

The new building was dedicated in recognition of Richard Ferguson, a longtime member of the Vauxhall Ag Society whose dedication knows no bounds. A seasoned competitor with notable achievements such as qualifying for the World Series of Team Roping in Las Vegas and winning a saddle at the Wrangler Team Roping Finals, Ferguson’s passion for the sport is infectious. Whether it’s hosting South Country Team Ropings or imparting invaluable wisdom, Ferguson’s impact is immeasurable.

Beyond the arena, Jones and Ferguson’s unwavering commitment to the Vauxhall Rodeo Grounds has been instrumental in its revitalization efforts.

Despite the inclement weather on Sunday, the atmosphere brimmed with warmth and appreciation as attendees gathered to honour these esteemed individuals. Their tireless efforts and dedication serve as inspiration for generations to come.

The Vauxhall Rodeo Committee and Vauxhall Ag Society are embarking on a new chapter, rallying support for the construction of a new building at the Rodeo Grounds. The current aging ATCO trailer, while steeped in history, no longer meets the demands as it is worn out and beyond repair. With plans underway for a 40×60 foot building, equipped for shelter during events and storage, the vision for the future is bright. This endeavour represents one of the final steps in the rodeo ground’s renovation plan, ensuring that the Rodeo Grounds remain a hub of activity regardless of the elements. As we reflect on the remarkable achievements of Malcolm Jones and Richard Ferguson, let us also embrace the promise of tomorrow.

The Vauxhall Ag Society and the Rodeo Committee are committed to preserving our heritage, honouring Jones and Ferguson’s hard work as well as prior work done by the Vauxhall Saddle Club and providing a wonderful facility for generations to come.
