The City of Brooks is pleased to announce that a $50,000 grant was received from the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC) that was used to purchase an electric ice resurfacer in 2024.

The MCCAC is a partnership of Alberta Municipalities, the Rural Municipalities of Alberta, and the Government of Alberta. Funding for the Electric Vehicles for Municipalities Program was provided by the Government of Alberta.

Electric ice resurfacers can be more expensive to purchase compared to propane ice resurfacers, but the long-term cost savings speak for themselves. Over the lifespan of a propane ice resurfacer, it is estimated that $100,000 worth of propane would be needed to power the unit; however, over the lifespan of an electric ice resurfacer, it is expected that only $13,500 worth of electricity is required.

Mayor John Petrie expressed his enthusiasm for the City’s investment in sustainable infrastructure, stating, “The purchase of an electric ice resurfacer reflects our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and fiscal responsibility. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC) for their generous support in making this investment possible. By embracing innovative solutions like this, we not only reduce our carbon footprint but also set a positive example for other municipalities to follow.”

“As a parent, I know that how important arenas are to communities, and how much energy they can use,” said Rebecca Schulz, Minister of Environment and Protected Areas. “Energy efficiency upgrades can carry a high price tag, which is why we’re pleased to help fund this project. This electric ice resurfacer will help lower Brooks’ utility costs while reducing emissions and supporting family fun at the rink.”

“The purchase of an electric ice resurfacer makes our operations more efficient and cost effective. Not only are we reducing emissions and improving indoor air quality in our arena, but we will be saving on fuel and maintenance costs as well. This is a great initiative to move us into more sustainable operations,” stated Randi McPhillips, Manager, Recreation Services.

The City of Brooks extends its gratitude to the MCCAC and the Government of Alberta for their support in advancing sustainable initiatives within the municipality. With this investment, Brooks is proud to lead the way towards a greener, more resilient future.
