Prairie Post (West Edition) - - Alberta - BY HEATHER CAMERON

Southern Accord Chorus will perform a program called Heart and Soul at College Drive Community Church Nov. 24 celebrating almost 25 years.

Southern Accord Chorus is women of diverse ages and backgrounds who love the challenge of singing a cappella in four-part harmony, barbershop style.

“The music we sing in this highly stylized art form, lends itself to a wonderful and varied repertoire – ballads, show tunes, jazz, rock and roll, spiritual and beautiful Christmas music,” explained Carol Quan, a member of Southern Accord and chairperson of the Heart and Soul program.

Southern Accord, Quan says, has 34 members and the members are from all over Southern Alberta, all of them drawn to the group by their common love of making beautiful music as a group of friends.

The group came to fruition after a singing group in Raymond that was founded in the 90's folded and some of the members wanted to form a new acapella chorus.

“The name Southern Accord Chorus was chosen to represent our location, musicality and friendliness,” Quan said.

Quan says that Southern Accord's first performance was in February of 1994 at a local men’s barbershop chorus show.

Eventually, after gaining enough members, Southern Accord Chorus applied for a charter membership with Sweet Adelines International, an organization of nearly 25,000 women worldwide who sing four-part a cappella harmony, barbershop style. Southern Accord finally received charter membership on January 29, 1998

“The first musical director was Ruth Lindsay and now is Betty Baldwin with assistant directors Jill McLeod and Elaine Liebelt,” Quan said.

“Over the past 20 years the group has grown and evolved into an award winning ensemble receiving most improved, third and second place medals in the small chorus category at Western Canadian Sweet Adelines competitions.”

Heart and Soul is Southern Accord's way of celebrating 20 years as a female barbershop chorus and will feature many contemporary and Christmas songs in four part harmony. The event will also feature LCI singers directed by Karen Hudson and Sass-Eh.

“The motto of the group is “alone we sing, together we create harmony”,” Quan said.

“The chorus and quartet perform regularly throughout the community, offering talent for entertainment at events and charitable functions.”

Tickets for Heart and Soul are $20 for anyone over 12 and free for children 12 and under.
