Yellow Vest movement an important one for Alberta

- BY NEEL ROBERTS, OPINION

While we’re all prepping our New Year’s resolutions, let me make a prediction which has been unfolding for the last month in our beautiful province.

The “Yellow Vest Movement” which started this summer in France has not only spread like a wildfire across the pond but has landed in at many Canadian cities and in Alberta.

Coined as a move against carbon taxes, it’s way more than that and we should not kid ourselves this is resembling the reformation which transformed Europe over 500 years ago. No surprise, Alberta has been the biggest voice in this and they’ll get the credit for making it a national drive next year. With provincial and federal election months away, this non-violent, undertaking of the ordinary working person pushing back will sway a lot of influence.

MAGA, which stand for Make America Great Again south of the border now officially has the Wildrose version of it called Make “Alberta” Great Again. Looking back at the reformation, historians misplace it as a bunch of religious zealots who didn’t want to be Catholic.

While some of that is true, study it as it was more about freedom. The ordinary man under the old system could no longer worship whom they want, provide for their families while preserving their heritage. I’m celebrating 25 years in this wonderful province and this is nicely serendipitous. MAGA on for 2019 and beyond!
