Town of Milk River’s response to COVID-19 similar to other towns

- BY HEATHER CAMERON

The community of Milk River is taking precautions against COVID-19 that are similar to ones already taken by other communities.

“The Town of Milk River, the villages of Stirling and Warner, and the County of Warner are cooperating with each other on a regional scale,” Peggy Losey, Mayor of Milk River says. “Jamie Anderson is the Director of Emergency Management/Health and Safety Coordinator for the County of Warner and she is doing amazing work.”

The community, Losey adds, is reacting very well to the COVID-19 situation and everyone is complying with the government regulations. In accordance with those regulations, Losey says, all public events in Milk River have been cancelled and all non-required businesses have closed.

“It really isn’t any different for our community than it is for communities across the country,” Losey says. “There have been impacts, but residents are adapting, and they are doing well with it.”

Losey says that the Town is working with agencies like FCSS to ensure that there is help available to those who may need it or want to ask about it. Residents, Losey says, are also making phone calls to friends and neighbors and people are basically helping each other however they can.

The Town, Losey says, is highly encouraging residents to follow the rules and guidelines put forth by the Alberta and federal governments. Those guidelines can be found on the Town of Milk River website http://www.milkriver.ca/covid-19-update-1/ or on the Town’s Facebook page, Losey says.

“We have a small rural community that has always rolled up their sleeves and helped each other,” Losey says. “I don’t want to say that just one person stands out above all of the rest, but all of the staff at the hospital, the first responders, the staff at the seniors’ care facility, the municipal staff, and other essential workers have all really gone above and beyond in this situation.”
