Canada needs to support education in low-income countries

- EDITOR: Sajjad Jessa, Alberta

Education systems in low-income countries have never been ideal, but the COVID-19 pandemic has become a huge barrier. School closures due to the pandemic have a much greater effect than in Canada, because children don’t have the same home environment as we do. Missing out on school can not only postpone children’s education, but have them miss out on education altogether.

Education is essential, especially in these low-income countries. If children don’t get the education they need, the future generation won’t be able to fill jobs and the country won’t develop.

The future of these countries is closely entwined with the future of Canada and the situation is one we cannot simply spectate. Investing in education in these low-income countries is the most important humanitarian aid venture we can carry out. Canada and the Trudeau government needs to act now and invest in low-income countries’ education to stop this detrimental impact of COVID-19.
