Pre-Dawn lunar “super flower” eclipse coming May 26

- By Neel Roberts, Opinion

Set your alarm for 5 a.m. May 26 as we are in for a short treat before starting the day.

Southern Alberta will get about a half an hour view of a Total Lunar eclipse in the South West sky.

The overshadowing starts at 2:47 a.m. before going into totality at 5:11 a.m. then setting for the day at 5:42 a.m.

May is called the “Flower” Moon and because it is closest to Earth on its elliptical path, it appears a little brighter and bigger than usual. The Earth’s shadow will cause it to have a crimson red color resulting in it being named a “Blood Moon”.

The naked eye event requires no visual aids but under a scope or binos it is an extra treat.
