$6 million Reno for SAAG

The Southern Alberta Art Gallery Maansiksikaitsitapiitsinikssin is thrilled to announce Lethbridge City Council has approved its $5.78-million renovation as part of the City’s 2022-2031 Capital Improvement Program (CIP).

This exciting project encompasses the design, planning, and construction of needs-based improvements to the Gallery, including facility upgrades, a modest food services/catering kitchen, and dynamic patio/programming space engaging Galt Gardens.

“This represents an exciting new chapter for both the Southern Alberta Art Gallery and for Lethbridge,” said Board of Directors co-Chair Melissa Arseniuk. “This funding addresses the immediate needs of our City-owned facility, and will allow us to expand our programming offerings, enhance the guest experience, and ultimately become a top-notch destination for residents and visitors alike. We are extremely grateful for City Council’s support, and we can’t wait to see this project move forward.”

The renovation incorporates modest renovations that optimize the existing floorplan; provide essential security and environmental controls; introduce a much-needed loading dock; develop a dynamic outdoor patio scope overlooking Galt Gardens; and allow for a practical catering kitchen that facilitates expanded events, programs and a collaborative seasonal “pop-up bistro”, among other enhancements. Further details will be released in the coming months, as the project moves into the planning and design stages.

During the previous CIP cycle the City approved $2.7-million for the Gallery, however that project relied on outside funding and ultimately did not move ahead. The revised 2021 application reflects an entirely new vision and leadership, does not rely on outside funding, and with the City’s support, is now able to move ahead. Meanwhile, outside funding will be incorporated into future stages of the rejuvenation project, which includes a dynamic “Art Park” and legacy naming opportunities.
