Lethbridge County’s Division 5 by-election set

- CONTRIBUTED

At last week’s nomination withdrawal deadline, three County residents have put their names forward for Councillor in the Division 5 by-election: Brad Howe – 403-593-2887; Gerard Plettell – 403-3814074 and Eric Van Essen – 403-330-7847.

As the County did not receive any nominations for Division 5 in the October municipal election, the Minister of Municipal Affairs directed Council to hold a by-election before April 30, 2022. Council has chosen General Election Day as Dec. 13 to allow the new Councillor the opportunity to become familiarized with the role as soon as possible into the 2021-2025 term.

Residents of Division 5 will have two opportunities to vote for their candidate: An Advance Vote will be held on Saturday, Dec. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lethbridge County administration office (#100, 905 4 Avenue S., Lethbridge). General Election Day will be on Monday, Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Monarch Community Hall (330 Kipp Avenue, Monarch). Only residents of Division 5 are eligible to vote. Voters must also be 18 years of age or older and be a Canadian citizen. Division 5 is in the northwest portion of the County, including Monarch and the area surrounding the Town of Nobleford and Village of Barons.

COVID-19 safety precautions will be in place at voting locations, including social distancing between voters, frequent sanitization of voting stations, and masks and sanitizer available for voters. Proof of vaccination is not required to vote.
