Lethbridge Steamers Wheelchair Basketball Tournament takes place at the end of January

Wheelchair basketball teams from across Alberta will make their way to the Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organizati­on’s Fritz Sick Gymnasium at the end of this month.

Games will go January 29-20: Saturday 9, 10:30, 1:00 and 2:30 SUN 9:00, 10:30, 12 and 1:30 (Final) with teams from Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Edmonton and Calgary.

Covid restrictio­ns means no spectators. All participan­ts and Media must have a QR vaccinatio­n code to enter the venue.

The Lethbridge Steamers is a Southern Alberta wheelchair basketball team who compete in the Prairie Division with Edmonton, Calgary, Medicine Hat, Saskatoon and

Winnipeg. The team is comprised of male and female players from Lethbridge, Fort McLeod, Taber and Raymond.

Wheelchair basketball is a Paralympic sport and Canada is one of the top teams in the world. The game is organized with a point system based on ability, which allows people with or without disability to play together. The Lethbridge Steamers (formerly known as the Strong Arms) was started in the early 1980s and played in national and internatio­nal competitio­ns.

The Lethbridge Steamers is part of the Lethbridge Wheelchair Basketball Associatio­n, who also run a drop-in program on Thursdays at the Fritz Sick gym.
