Kodiaks excited to add Stirling product

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks men’s basketball program has added another local talent, as head coach Ryan Heggie is excited to announce the commitment of Treydon Barton from Stirling, Alta.

Barton is a six-foot guard who will join the Kodiaks after finishing his high school career with Magrath High School. Heggie says he’s excited to add another talented two-way player.

“Trey is a throwback point guard of sorts,” says Heggie. “He wants to facilitate for his teammates first and score second. He’s also not afraid of ‘the moment’ as was evident in his team’s 4A South Zone Championship win over Cardston.”

While Heggie sees great playmaking ability in his latest recruit, he knows Barton can also be a dangerous scorer in his own right.

“Trey can score the ball attacking or via the three ball,” adds Heggie. “Trey was well coached in high school and has that quiet leadership skill about him.”

Barton is following in family footsteps, as his father Mason Barton suited up for the Kodiaks for two seasons from 1993-95. Beyond the family ties, Treydon says he has also attended many basketball camps coached by Heggie, which helps make the transition to his new team feel a little easier.

“I’m excited to continue playing at a higher level and look forward to the challenges that come with it,” says Barton. “I’m looking forward to being part of a team and continuing in a sport I love.”

When asked what he brings to the court, Barton says he’s willing to use all his tools to help the team in their pursuit of a conference championship.

“My job as a guard is to do whatever the team needs to be successful,” says Barton. “I feel that my speed, decision making, and shooting can all help with that.”

The Kodiaks finished in second place in the competitive ACAC south division last season and will tip-off their 2022-23 regular season in October. Kodiaks Fun Facts

Barton says his favourite NBA team is the Minnesota Timberwolves, with his favourite player being D’Angelo Russell.

He has enrolled in Lethbridge College’s General Arts & Science program.
