Powerhouse Irish Mythen takes the Empress stage

- CONTRIBUTED

Contemporary folk singer-songwriter Irish Mythen is coming to the Empress stage on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. Mythen’s is the third concert in the 2022/2023 Centre Stage Concert Series.

Mythen was born and raised in County Wexford, Ireland and moved around the globe before emigrating to Canada and settling in Prince Edward Island in 2007. She has gained recognition around the globe with her latest release, Little Bones. The album landed her a 2020 JUNO nomination for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year, seven Music PEI 2020 nominations and two wins, plus a Canadian Folk Music Nomination for Solo Artist of the Year.

Her live performances have been called a thing of raw power, intensity and connection with her audience.

The youngest of three children, Mythen fell in love with music at an early age, influenced by the music her parents listened to, including Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, the Irish folk duo Makem & Clancy, and Peter, Paul & Mary. As a teenager, she taught herself to play the guitar by ear and discovered her voice. She enrolled at the Ballyfermot College of Further Education in Dublin, where she learned the business and performance aspects of musicianship.

Her Irish roots and Maritime culture both heavily influence the storytelling nature of her songs. Little Bones is an emotionally powerful album underscored by strong narratives. Her superb songwriting skills are showcased through lyrics that cover a gamut of issues, from social justice to politics to love.

Mythen’s three previous albums include Sweet Necessity (2008), Open Here (2011) and Irish Mythen (2015).

In recent years, Mythen has performed with Rod Stewart, Gordon Lightfoot and Lucinda Williams at major festival stages the world over. She opened Melissa Etheridge’s Australian tour in 2016. Reviews in Australian Guitar Magazine, Rolling Stone, and a plethora of online publications worldwide have helped plant Mythen firmly on the map of ‘Must See Artists’.

About the Empress Theatre The Empress Theatre in Fort Macleod is a rare gem: one of the oldest operating theatres in the country. Built in 1912, the elegant Empress hosts movies, musicals and musicians throughout the year. From the neon tulip lights that grace the theatre’s pressed tin ceiling, to the original ticket wicket and dressing rooms (not to mention our resident ghost, Ed), the Empress is a special place where neighbours gather to celebrate and nurture local, Albertan and Canadian performers. We look forward to having you join us.
