Lieutenant Bliss Wilberforc­e Ryan

Bliss Ryan made the trip from Fort Macleod to Valcartier and enlisted with the Canadian Engineers on Sept. 23, 1914. In the spring of 1915, he arrived in France, where he was promoted to corporal and twice wounded. On Oct. 10, 1916, Corporal Ryan was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field and also received a promotion to lieutenant. He was killed in action on Sept. 20, 1917 near Ypres and laid to rest at Mendinghem Military Cemetery. In addition to the Military Medal, he was awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal for his wartime service.
