Man charged in ex-wife poisoning plot

-

A 35-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged with attempted murder in relation to an alleged case of poisoning.

Lyle Derek White made his first appearance at Regina Provincial Court Friday morning. Clothed in white coveralls — provided to an accused when investigators seize clothing as potential evidence — White’s appearance was brief, lasting only long enough for him to say he wanted to speak with a lawyer from Legal Aid.

The Crown has opposed his release from custody, meaning a bail hearing will likely have to be held. His charges have been set over to April 18.

White was charged with attempted murder in a case involving his 37-year-old exwife.

He also faces charges of possession of stolen property and break and enter.

The investigation began on Tuesday when the alleged victim reported to police that she believed her ex-husband had tried to poison her.

It is alleged White placed a harmful substance in a soft drink in the woman’s refrigerator sometime on April 7. Officers began the investigation by seizing evidence and sending it for further analysis.

On Thursday, police received an allegation that White had unlawfully entered the home of the alleged victim when she was not at home. Police arrested White without incident at approximately 11 a.m. on Thursday in relation to the alleged break and enter. After further investigation, police gathered evidence leading to charges in relation to the break and enter allegation and a charge of attempted murder in the April 7 incident.
