Bat-mystery solved
Upon seeing the infamous Bat-Signal shining in downtown Regina, one may have thought that Commissioner Gordon had transferred to the Regina Police Service.
Residents took to Twitter Thursday night, sharing images and asking who was behind the Batman symbol that was projected onto the NCO building at Victoria Avenue and Albert Street.
The secret identity of the projectionist was later revealed to be Darren Szabo, a new business owner in the city who recently launched his company Light It Up Promotions.
The company’s Facebook page says the projections can be used for advertising campaigns, trade shows and other special events.
“In this day and age advertisers and promoters are always looking for something different and unique and eye-catching, and what I can do is provide that big impression,” said Szabo, who can use the projector to create an image up to 150 feet wide. So why the Bat-Signal? “My thinking is if it works for Batman then it can work for you too,” said Szabo.
“With the success of the movie just recently it’s kind of perfect timing.”
After getting permission from the NCO building staff to use the structure as a canvas, Szabo headed out on Thursday night and projected the image. Although it was up for just a couple of hours, Szabo said he saw hundreds of people stopping and getting out of their cars to take pictures.
Szabo was delighted to see the warm reception the images received on Twitter, which were shared by dozens of users in the city. Thanks to the online buzz, Szabo said he’s already been contacted by city hall, Regina Downtown and various media outlets.
Szabo said he plans on projecting more images around the city at “various secret locations.” He’ll also be projecting an image of SaskTel’s mascot Red onto the SaskTel building during the Roughriders’ game against the B.C. Lions at Mosaic Stadium on tonight.
