Sod turned on new affordable housing
Sod was turned in Regina on Monday for the development of two 11-unit affordable apartment buildings.
The federal and provincial governments partnered to fund the majority of the project, which costs an estimated $5.2 million.
“Our government is investing in affordable housing here in Saskatchewan and across Canada to help create jobs and improve the quality of life of Canadians who need it most,” Palliser MP Ray Boughen said in a news release.
“Like many communities across the province, Regina is experiencing significant population and economic growth,” said Regina-Walsh Acres MLA Warren Steinley. “Creating more affordable housing is vital to our community’s well being...”
The funding is the result of a $55-million investment in an affordable housing agreement between the provincial and federal governments. Under the agreement, Saskatchewan will use the funds to create new housing and renovate existing affordable housing for those in need.
The buildings will be located on the 1900 block of Halifax Street, in Coun. Shawn Fraser’s ward. He said addressing the need for affordable housing in Regina is a priority.
“This project is another step toward resolving this issue. The City of Regina is pleased to have contributed to this important housing project. It is another great example of what can be accomplished when we work together with our partners to provide homes for families in need,” he said.
The city contributed $200,000 to the project.
