Grizzlies, Reapers going for gold
The Regina Christian Grizzlies’ Zak Tamlin is hoping to celebrate championships in two divisions during the 2012-13 basketball season.
Tamlin, who helped the Grizzlies win the Regina Intercollegiate Basketball League’s junior boys small schools title earlier this month, has moved up to the senior division for the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association playoffs.
On Friday, Tamlin scored 23 points to lead the Regina Christian School representative to an 80-62 victory over the Osler Valley Christian Academy Lions in a 3A boys semifinal at Hoopla — the SHSAA basketball championships — in Saskatoon.
The Grizzlies advanced to today’s 3A boys final against the Clavet Cougars, who defeated the Shaunavon Shadows 60-54 in Friday’s other semifinal.
Another Regina-based team — the Harvest City Reapers — will also play for a provincial championship after defeating Saskatoon Christian 85-64 in a 2A boys semifinal on Friday.
Atlee Simon, who is competing in his fourth consecutive Hoopla, led Harvest City with 29 points.
The Reapers, from Harvest City Christian Academy, are to meet the Birch Hills Marauders for the provincial title.
Harvest City is hoping to win its sixth consecutive title at Hoopla, but its first in 2A boys. The Reapers were previously in the 1A loop.
Other divisions shape up as follows heading into today’s finals:
1A BOYS The Lutheran Collegiate Bible Institute Bisons, from Outlook, will meet the St. Brieux Crusaders in the final.
1A GIRLS The Middle Lake Avengers and Kenaston Kodiaks will tip off for the gold medal. In a semifinal, Middle Lake defeated Harvest City 78-74.
2A GIRLS The Wynyard Bears and Meath Park Mustangs are in the final. Meath Park got 38 points from Lexi Rowden
in a 77-65 semifinal victory over the Foam Lake Panthers. Larissa Wolitski had 19 points to lead Wynyard to a 74-42 victory over Birch Hills.
3A GIRLS The Lumsden Angels will meet Clavet for provincial laurels. Lumsden defeated the Caronport Cougars 64-39 in a semifinal.
4A BOYS The Prince Albert St. Mary Marauders and Moose Jaw Central Cyclones are destined for the final.
Central defeated the O’Neill Titans 74-49 in a semifinal. Central’s Myles McDougall and O’Neill’s Yol Piok had 15 points apiece.
4A GIRLS The Moose Jaw Peacock Toilers and Meadow Lake Spartans are in the championship game.
Moose Jaw defeated the North Battleford Comprehensive Vikings 68-64 behind 22 points from Amy Williams. In the other semifinal, Meadow Lake defeated the Notre Dame Hounds 68-60. Brooklyn Bertoia led Notre Dame with 15 points.
“Our kids worked hard all year and this was our goal — to get to the gold-medal game and win it,’’ Hounds head coach Wayne Morrison told Darren Zary of the StarPhoenix. “Now we’re not going to get there. It’s pretty disappointing.’’
